Speech and Language Therapy is a Protected Profession. I am registered with the HCPC, as is required by law for my profession.

This means it is illegal to claim to be an SLT if you have not received the correct training, and are not registered with the Health Care Professions Council. As with any qualified and registered Speech and Language Therapist, I can be found through the HCPC website member search.

I am a certified member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, and registered with The Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice.

Being a member of the RCSLT is not a mandatory requirement for the profession, but many institutions and employers list RCSLT membership as part of their own requirements and preferences.

Membership with ASLTIP is not a mandatory requirement for the profession, but it can provide benefits, such as being on their publicly searchable database where potential clients may find them.

Speech and Language Therapy Qualification and Career

After growing up with two siblings on the Autistic Spectrum and as a result having connections with many children with additional needs through my brothers’ schools and family support groups, I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in Speech and Language Therapy.

I went to Leeds Beckett University and qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist through a Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists approved Batchelor of Science Degree: “Clinical Language Sciences: Speech and Language Therapy”.

As a newly qualified Therapist, I worked for a private Speech and Language Therapy company. I then progressed to work for a private mental health hospital provider for individuals with Learning Disabilities. After this I continued along my career path to work for an Autism residential service provider, covering a large region with multiple sites. After the birth of my first child I explored work at another mental health inpatient service provider as it was closer to home, however after a year I returned to the Autism residential company for a short period. I currently work for a large care company, acting regionally to support numerous Learning Disability and Autism services in my area. I also provide Speech and Language Therapy and related Therapeutic services on an independent basis.

My Values

Invested

I always go above and beyond to ensure holistic high quality care for my clients. I approach cases with a professional skill set, but with the added experience of having been on the other side- a family member of someone receiving therapy.

Rapport

Therapy is more effective when implemented through a shared connection of respect. I will always strive to build a relationship with clients that fosters warmth and trust in my input.

Integrity

My clients’ best interests are always at the heart of what I do. If I am not comfortable with an approach I will be honest, whether this is requested of me, or something I see other professionals undertaking.

Co-Production

It’s not about what the textbooks say, it’s about what barriers an individual is facing, and working together to find a practical way they can overcome them in the real world.
